Ellie Fellers Fine Quilts Featured in Norway Savings Bank Exhibit
NORWAY - The fine quilts of Western Mainer Art Group (WMAG) Member Ellie Fellers will be featured in a public art exhibit in the windows of the Norway Savings Bank Operations Center for the month of March 2010.
Norway Savings Bank and the WMAG have been working together for decades in support of community arts. In 2008 the two organization fordged a partership where the WMAG builds monthly art installatiions in the Operations Center which has 15 windows faccing Main Street.
After a long career as a physical
therapist and journalist, a diagnosis of breast cancer in 1999 led Fellers to
discover quilt making during her recovery. Working with fiber has been a part
of her whole life. She has been creating quilts during the past eight years. In
addition, Fellers is a professional photographer and journalist freelancing for
the Lewiston Sun Journal covering New Gloucester.
“The world of color surrounding me inspires all my activities
daily. I consider the quilts to be beloved objects that can help heal the soul
and provide purpose to life,” said the WMAG exhibiting member. “I find
that the fabric and thread I weave makes a spiritual connection to a life force
today and hopefully for many years to come. I have amassed enormous amounts of
fabric. And, I'm now prepared to meet the wider demand for my
work.”
She is especially taken with ethnic
fabrics, and the distinct designs and fabric form through batik making. Several
examples of the quilts are included in the window exhibit.
In 2009 the Western Maine Art Group in Norway accepted one of
her quilts to display in a juried show at the Lajos Matolcsy Arts Center. Then, seven quilts were exhibited in a fiber
show there. Fiddlehead Center for the Arts is currently exhibiting several of Fellers’
quilts and from December through early February her work hung in the Vestry of
the First Congregational Church of New Gloucester. In addition to being a member of the WMAG,
Fellers is also a member of the Pine Tree Quilt Guild, and is currently
studying with Suzanne Biddle of Auburn, Maine.
